Posted

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Gladys Margaret-Joy Williams, departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022.

Gladys, a native of Cleveland, was born on June 4, 1937, to the late Edvance Ramsey and Martha Tibbs Ramsey, both of Cleveland.

Gladys, as she was affectionately called, received her formal education at College Hill High School in Cleveland. She furthered her education at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. Gladys received her nursing degree and pursued a career in nursing at Bradley Memorial Hospital for many years at Bradley County nursing home. She followed her dream, which led her to become the owner and operator of “Bo Peep Day Care” in Cleveland; and later become the owner of “Romper Room Day Care” in Knoxville. She had over 40 years of professional experience in the daycare industry.

Gladys was a member at Redemption Church in Knoxville but frequently attended St. James Ministries when visiting her daughter in Cleveland. Gladys was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She was a kindhearted woman, full of laughter, and readily made friends with those in her acquaintance. She was a devoted teacher to the children in her care, providing love, structure and teachings to their daily lives.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, the Rev. Clifford H. Williams Sr.; sisters, Willie Virginia Nance and Mary Elizabeth King; brothers, Joseph Ramsey, Charles G. Ramsey, Julius Ramsey, Calvin Ramsey and Morgan Ramsey; and nephew, Ernest Lee Nance.

She leaves to cherish her memory and mourn in passing, Brenda L. Williams Porter (Jonathan C. Porter) of Cleveland; son, Clifford H. Williams Jr. of Knoxville; grandchildren, Sashual Yulonda-Joy Willams-Porter-Thomas (Gabriel N. Thomas), Breandra Chalonda Leigh Porter, Jonathan Lashaun Aquero Porter, Alijah Shalonda-Qwen-Porter (fiancé, Zavier A. Blair) and Jonathan Faizon Xavier Porter; great-grandchildren, Kortney Alena, JoRell Q. and Hezekiah J. Thomas, Zayli O. and Azylah O. Porter-Blair; special friend, Leroy Foster of Knoxville; special niece, Azella Smith (Len Smith) of Atlanta, Georgia; great-nephew, Patrick O. Langham (Jennifer Langham); sister-in-law, Clara B. Ramsey, Athens; and a host of other nieces, nephews, great-nephews, other family members, special guests and friends.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. service time on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, at Saint James Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 151 Short St. NE, Cleveland.

The interment is to follow at Fort Hill Cemetery.
