Born May 30, 1949, in Cleveland, he was in the first graduating class of Cleveland High in 1967. He retired as a lieutenant from Florida state law enforcement and worked 14 years with the Cherokee Council Boy Scouts.

Gary was a lifelong fan of FSU Seminoles and the Atlanta Braves. But first and foremost, he was a child of God, and a devoted husband and father.

Preceded in death by his father, Benjamin R. Griffin Jr., Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 30-plus years, Janis M. Griffin of Chattanooga; mother, Martha “Lucy” Griffin of Cleveland; four daughters, Ronda Ellison (Jody) of Live Oak, Fla., Dana Johnson (Jason) of St. Augustine, Fla., Leigh Humkey (Chris) of Ringgold, Ga., and Lori Brown (Harold) of Hixson; six grandchildren, Emily Dann (Robert), Benjamin Humkey (Samantha), Jacob Ellison, Zoe Ellison, and Payton and Taylor Johnson.

Services will be on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at 1:30 p.m., at The Village of Ashwood Clubhouse, 2400 Baskette Way, Chattanooga, TN 37421 with Pastor Tony Walliser officiating.

A memorial will be conducted for friends and family at the Big Springs Baptist Church in Cleveland — time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Silverdale Baptist Church Building Fund.
