Dear Annie: I have been with my fiancé for 21 years, and we've been engaged for nine. We have three beautiful girls together, and he has two older kids from his previous marriage. He has always made me feel like second best. He always puts his ex's feelings before mine and never takes what I say into consideration. I bring this up to him, and he says that I need to grow up. He tells me that my daughters and I should know our place as women. more

Dear Annie: Here's my dilemma: I moved back into my dad's house several years ago, and he has been good friends with "Chuck" and his wife "Rose" for at least 20 years. He goes out to dinner with them regularly and often has them over to the house for drinks and cards. more
Dear Heloise: I am a senior citizen living by myself in Northern Indiana. Right now, we are in the middle of a blizzard. As a safety precaution, if I absolutely need to go outside on these cold days, I always make sure I have a house key in my coat pocket. One never knows when a lock could accidentally get turned on the way out the door. The results could be deadly. Stay safe.— Michael Noll, via email more
Dear Annie: My stepson said many nasty, derogatory, hurtful things about his recently deceased father. My husband was well-respected by his peers and friends. Yes, he had his faults, but I loved him dearly, and he was a very good man. more

Dear Heloise: After reading "Doesn't Compute" from a previous column, I just couldn't help writing to you for the first time ever. When we visit a couple of our all-time best friends, they often say, "Let's watch some TV after eating dinner." They bring up a station with a good show or movie, and we settle down to watch. Within minutes, I realize I'm watching the program by myself. All I see is the top of their heads looking down. more
Dear Readers: Many of you were touched by the husband "Anonymous," who wrote a letter about the loss of his wife to the disease of alcoholism. She is still alive, but the woman he married was a different person than the one who is an alcoholic. Most recommended Al-Anon, a spin-off from Alcoholics Anonymous that focuses on helping people who are suffering because of a loved one's drinking problem. more

Dear Heloise: I don't have a "one tip fits all" for servers, so I decide on the spot. Food servers have always been known for making low wages and surviving just on tipping. If I get good service, I tip them good. With all the "Help Wanted" signs on doors and windows, and the few workers inside, I sometimes tip 20% or more to those willing to work. Many deserve it. more
Dear Annie: One of my good female friends graduated from a rival college of mine. We love talking smack about who has a better football team. When her school loses games, I gloat. One time this year, I said her school had zero chance of winning against my school. I did this level of trash-talking for two months, practically daily. more
