Ocoee Chapter DAR meets The Ocoee Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution held its March meeting recently at the Elks Lodge. Regent Leigh Ann Boyd presided and led members in the Ritual, and Chaplain Virginia Orr led the prayer. Boyd read President General Denise Doring VanBuren’s message to the Daughters. Boyd spoke of her own father’s military service in Vietnam and announced that National Vietnam War Veterans Day will be observed on March 29. National Defense Chairman Sarah Dorset spoke about the history of the lawn jockey statue, often seen at entrances of homes. The story of the statue begins on an icy winter night in December 1776 when General George Washington decided to cross the Delaware River to launch a surprise attack on the British forces at Trenton. Jocko Graves, the 12-year-old son of a free Black man, wanted to help General Washington succeed. Since he was too young to serve as a soldier, he volunteered to look after the horses. This job was essential to Washington's plan, since they could not transport the horses to the opposite shore. more
