The Cleveland Board of Education is inviting the community to a public forum Thursday to give suggestions on the criteria the board should consider in selecting the new schools director.

Cleveland City Schools’ current director, Dr. Rick Denning, will retire from the school system effective June 2011, with 17 years of service to Cleveland Schools.

“We want to encourage all residents to come out and express their input on the criteria we need to use in selecting our next director of schools,” said Peggy Pesterfield, chairman of the Cleveland Board of Education.

Tennessee School Board Association is contracted to conduct the search for the director’s position.

Dr. Tammy Grisson, TSBA executive director, and CaNesha Gordon, TSBA member services assistant, will lead the group discussions.

“Selecting a new director is important to the whole community. It’s probably the most important decision the school board will ever make. We need the community’s assistance,” said Pesterfield.

The Board of Education expects to make an announcement about the finalist in March 2011.

The public forum will be held at Cleveland Middle School at 6 p.m. Oct. 7.
