Head coach Nate Brown knew a win against Boyd-Buchanan would set the right tone for Walker Valley.

Tuesday night, the Lady Mustangs were able to trample the visiting Lady Bucs 4-1 in their season opener.

“To win your opening game 4-1 to a good opponent makes me very proud of the girls,” Coach Brown declared.

The match showcased the talents of some of the younger players on the varsity squad, as all four goals were scored by freshmen.

Three of those goals came from freshman forward Taylor Ellis, with midfielder Caitlin Dickson notching one of her own as well.

Ellis scored the first two goals of the game, with respective assists from sophomore Mya Patel and freshman Lauren Caylor.

Dickson’s goal came about 25 minutes into the first half and was unassisted.

“We’ve got a few players that can do really well and I just keep telling them to keep working and it will pay off,” Brown explained.

The Lady Bucs were able to get their lone goal of the game in the final 10 minutes of the half.

With a 3-1 lead at the half, Ellis was able to get one final goal past the Boyd keeper early in the second half.

The Lady Mustangs utilized two keepers in the match, with sophomore Morgan Watson seeing about six shots in the first half and senior Abby Sanders fending off three shots in the second half.

Walker Valley will travel to Englewood Thursday evening, for a 5:30 battle with the Lady Chargers, who went 12-8-1 and reached the A-AA Sectionals in 2013.

MCMINNVILLE — After their season opener against Hixson on Monday evening had to be rescheduled due to the weather, the Bearettes traveled nearly two hours northwest to take on a tough Warren County team.

The District 6-AAA team and Region 3-AAA opponent finished its 2013 season with a record of 16-6, falling to Oakland in the AAA Sectional.

Bradley found itself down 2-0 at the half.

Senior Caley Jones got the lone goal of the night for the Bearettes, but the Lady Pioneers were still able to add two more goals to the scoreboard for a 4-1 win.

Bradley will travel to East Ridge next Tuesday for a 6 p.m. match.
