Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi supporters
Stan and Maggie Evans of Cleveland are showing their support for the release of U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who was arrested April 1 after he crossed into Mexico with three loaded guns in the back of his truck. He is being held in a Mexican prison. The 25-year-old U.S. Marine served two tours in Afghanistan. He was beginning treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder in San Diego, according to news accounts. Tahmooressi said he accidentally crossed at the San Diego-Mexico border when he made a wrong turn at the border crossing. His trial in Tijuana, Mexico, began Aug. 4. It is expected to continue for several weeks. The Obama administration has been pressed to intervene in the case. However, Mexican authorities insist the case is “a judicial issue that will be resolved by the Mexican federal courts.” More than 130,000 people have signed a petition on the White House website demanding his release. The Evanses have tied a yellow ribbon around trees to show their support for his release.
