Barbara G Yancey, 80, a resident of Lafayette, Ga., passed away Friday, July 11, 2014.

She lived in Valdosta, Ga., for some 50 years. She was born and raised in the Eastman/Rentz Georgia community. She graduated from Mercer College in Macon, Ga. with a major in history. She met and married her husband at Mercer where he was studying law before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He finished his army tour overseas in Italy during the Korean War while she was based in West Virginia. After his tour of duty was finished, her husband met his law partner at St. Simons Island and ended up in Valdosta in 1958.

She moved to Lafayette, Ga. in September 2012 to live out her days in the home of her daughter, Jill Y Hill. She raised four children in Valdosta and settled with her family there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Grinstead; her husband, Reuben H. Yancey; her oldest daughter, Linda Y. Barham; and oldest son, Chip Yancey.

Survivors include her son, James T. Yancey; her daughter, Jill Y Hill; grandchildren: Eddie Barham, Jason Barham, RJ Yancey, Mathew Yancey and Lori J Hill; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the McLain Funeral Home in Valdosta at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Valdosta.
