Kent Smith, former Bradley Central High School basketball coach, will be the director for the Youth Summer Basketball Camp at the Cleveland Family YMCA, said Lee McChesney, Vice President and Executive Director.

The camp, which will run July 7-10, is open to girls and boys from rising second grade to rising eighth grade. Daily sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until noon.

During Smith’s 17 seasons coaching in Bradley Central he earned a 436-145 record. He also took the Bears to five state tournaments with runner-up finishes in 2000 and 2003.

“It is great that Kent has agreed to direct this camp for us. His experience, commitment to youth and enthusiasm, will make camp a very positive, fun and informative camp for the participants. We are lucky to have him,” McChesney said.

Smith says his involvement, “is a chance to give back and stay involved in basketball.”

His personal coaching background is filled with much success. During his time at Bradley, Smith coached six players who went on to sign NCAA Division I scholarships and many others who went on to play at a variety of other levels. He also coached one TSSAA Mr. Basketball winner, Josh Hare, in 2000. He coached two other finalists for TSSAA Mr. Basketball, Justin Hare in 2004, and Terrence Oglesby in 2007.

Even though Smith is no longer the head coach for Bradley, he has continued his involvement by helping the basketball team on a volunteer basis. Smith says that he has “a true passion for basketball,” and believes his 23 years of experience will definitely aid him in the camp this summer.

“The focus of camp will be an introduction to the game fundamentals, teamwork, ball handling, footwork, shooting skills, communication, and individual practice skills,” he said. “I want to teach the kids and their parents that there are many practices that they can do at home to improve their skills.”

The registration deadline for the YMCA Basketball Camp is July 1st and space is limited. Call the YMCA at 476-5573 for more details.
