Retha Bell Pendergrass, 81, a longtime resident of Georgetown, went to be with her Heavenly Father Monday afternoon, June 23, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on March 6, 1933, in Murphy, N.C., a daughter of the late Lawrence and Edith Bell.
She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church.
She loved canning and cooking, but took the greatest pleasure in taking care of her family.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, William Arthel “Butchie” Pendergrass Jr.; four brothers: Kenneth Bell, Lloyd Bell, Billy Bell and Whalon Bell; and one sister, Evelyn Pendergrass.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband of 65 years, W. A. Pendergrass; two daughters: Virginia Wampler and Sharon Hanshaw and her husband, Joseph; one son, B.J. Pendergrass; grandchildren: Debbie, Melissa, Rebecca, Sherri, Tammi, Shannon, Bentlee and Jaxson; great-grandchildren; Aiden, Ava, Allie, Timothy, Tyler, Breanna, Jacob, Logan and Gavin; four sisters: Kathy Bird (Bobby), Elsie Hanks, Linda Omdahl and Sandy Martinez (Billy); numerous other extended family members; and a host of special friends.
A celebration of her life is planned for Friday, June 27, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Dixon Chapel of the North Cleveland Church of God with the Rev. Joseph Hanshaw officiating.
Interment will follow in the Johnston Cemetery in Georgetown with the family serving as pallbearers. The service will conclude with a white dove release.
The family will receive friends in the Dixon Chapel on Friday from noon until the 2 p.m. service time.
