The Scenic City’s City of Chattanooga Pipe Band finished up its 2014 spring competition season with three more first-place finishes, adding to a previous big first-place win last October at the Stone Mountain Highland Games in Georgia.

With these new top finishes, band members are celebrating four consecutive first-place finishes with much excitement for a feat not too many bands ever accomplish.

“We’ve been working really hard,” said Tom Arnold, pipe major for the band. “Our strength comes from our commitment to each other, the music, and lots and lots of practice. And because we’re consistently competing at the top of our game means we’re doing something right, and it feels good,“ he added.

On May 24 the band competed and won first place at the ninth Annual Gallabrae Highland Games in Greenville, S.C., beating out seven other bands in their Grade IV competition.

Bands come from far and wide to compete against each other with the hopes of taking the title as the best band in their division. Bagpipe bands consist of a corp of bagpipes and drums. The band also finished in first place at the Rural Hill Scottish Festival/Loch Norman Highland Games in Huntersville, N.C., on April 12, and captured a first-place win at the Smoky Mountain Highland Games on May 17 in Maryville.

Band members will be continuing their practice schedule for the next few months, preparing for their final upcoming competitions in October to wrap up their 2014 season.

The band has appeared several times throughout the Chattanooga and surrounding area at such events as Rock City Garden’s Shamrock City, Riverbend and UTC’s Football halftime shows.

The City of Chattanooga Pipe Band is under the direction of Pipe Maj. Tom Arnold and Drum Sgt. David Cameron.

The band is also available for private events or performances and is also always looking for new members.
