The Charleston MoJo beat the Boynton Bravest 3-2 in eight innings on Sunday at Hixson High School behind both the bat and arm of Colby Dills, who went 1-for-2 and hit a home run in the fourth inning.
Dills now has a .414 batting average on the season with 13 RBIs, one home run, a triple and three doubles.
MoJo Ace Jacob Sampson baffled the Bravest, striking out nine batters. Sampson allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks over seven innings. Sampson is now 1-1 on the season, with 40 strikeouts in 27 innings and a 2.85 ERA.
Dills recorded the win for the MoJo after pitching one shutout inning in the top of the eighth. He walked none and only allowed one hit. He is now 2-2 with a 2.50 ERA, after pitching in 14 innings with 12 strikeouts and only allowing five earned runs.
Jacob Stevens took the loss for the Bravest. He lasted 6 1-3 innings, walked three batters, struck out 10, and allowed three runs.
In the top of the second, the Bravest grabbed an early 1-0 lead. A solo blast by Colby Jones started the inning off. In the top of the third, the Bravest scored on an error, and it would turn out to be their last tally of the game.
The MoJo tied the ballgame at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. A single by Sampson started the inning off, followed by a two-run big shot to left by Colby Dills.
The MoJo gained some momentum by the hand of the defense in the top of the seventh inning with a sweet 6-4-3 double play from a tough grounder to Colby Dills at shortstop to Josh Hindman at second to Jeremiah Dills at first with a smooth stretch and dig out of the dirt.
The MoJo threatened offensively in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, but could not get a run in. Cecil Thompson started the threat off with a walk, followed by a single by Josh Walker and then another single by Jamaal Greene to load the bases. Bravest pitcher Stevens was able to get out of the bases loaded jam though with a strikeout.
The hero of the day, Randy Smith, stepped up in the bottom of the eighth for the MoJo with a walkoff, hot line-drive single to center to win the game 3-2. Colby Dills started the inning off with a leadoff walk, followed by a Jeremiah Dills single advancing Colby Dills to third. Jeremiah Dills then stole second base. Randy Smith then singled, plating Colby Dills to win the game for the MoJo.
“Toward the beginning of the season it was said we were considered a lower-tier team in this league, but now after four wins and a tie in our last six games, as well as three wins in a row, we are sitting nicely in fifth place out of 13 teams, and we expect to go nowhere but up from here. I believe heads are starting to turn and they are starting to take notice of the MoJo,” said head coach Joe Dills of the MoJo.
The Mojo are now 5-5-1 on the season. They will be back home in Charleston on June 22 for a doubleheader against The Middle Valley Marlins at 1:30 and 4 p.m. The MoJo will then travel to Nashville for the annual Battle in the Capital Baseball Classic, June 27 and 28. Admission is free, so come out, have some family fun and watch your local team play America’s Game in a truly intense, competitive fashion.
