KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee has added former Ohio signee Tariq Owens to its recruiting class.

Owens, a 6-foot-10 forward from Odenton, Maryland, signed with Ohio in November. He was granted a release from his letter of intent after Boston College hired away former Ohio coach Jim Christian.

In a university release Wednesday announcing the signing, Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall said Owens “can step out and make 15- to 18-footers, and he certainly has the potential to impact the game at the defensive end early in his career.”

Owens joins a recruiting class that also includes forwards Willie Carmichael and Jabari McGhee, guard Detrick Mostella and junior-college guards Devon Baulkman and Kevin Punter. Tennessee also has added two graduate transfers - former IUPUI guard Ian Chiles and former Florida Gulf Coast forward Eric McKnight.

Clark out as Tennessee

track, cross country coach

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee isn’t bringing back track and cross country coach J.J. Clark next season.

In a university release Wednesday, athletic director Dave Hart said the Volunteers won’t renew Clark’s contract when it expires at the end of June. Hart said “there is no definitive timetable” on selecting a replacement.

Clark arrived at Tennessee in 2002 as the women’s track and cross country coach. He took over the men’s program as well in the 2009-10 season. Clark led the women’s team to indoor national titles in 2005 and 2009, but the men’s and women’s programs had struggled recently.

The Tennessee men finished 11th and the women placed 10th in the Southeastern Conference outdoor championships that concluded Sunday. The Tennessee men were ninth and the women finished seventh in the SEC indoor championships.
