“LIVE with Kelly and Michael” announced Tuesday the winner of the 2014 Top Teacher Search is Ohio-based educator Stacie Starr.

While Cleveland’s own Athena Davis of Cleveland High School did not win the competition, it was not for lack of community support.

The local educator received hundreds of votes and well-wishes via the nationally syndicated TV show’s website and various social media platforms.

Supporters like Bud Kinches made their allegiance known online.

“I’m so proud of Athena,” Kinches wrote on Facebook. “She started teaching after I graduated so I never had her, but I’m proud to support this hometown hero.”

Others have never met Davis, but appreciated what they heard on the morning talk show.

“I do not know you, but what I saw on TV shows me you really care,” wrote Gloria Hayes. “We need more teachers like you. Supporting you and hope you win.”

Davis seems to be taking the loss in stride.

On Twitter, she tweeted, “So ... I didn’t win a car, but I win every single day by getting to come to a job I LOVE AND ADORE. Thanks for the support!”

She took the time to respond to well-wishers and assured each one the entire process was a delight.

The local English teacher may not have won the grand prize, a Ford Escape, but she did receive 30 Intel-powered HP Pavilion x360 2 in 1 devices for the high school and an eight-day trip to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem.
