Bishop Johnny Lebron McDermott, 79, of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Hospice of Chattanooga.

He was born to the late Ruth McDermott and Fred Benton in Chattanooga and was raised in Benton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Aileen Alston and Dallas Carter.

He was a graduate of College Hill High School, he served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division, he worked for the National Bank of Cleveland as a transporter of finances. He was employed with Jackson Manufacturing and retired from TVA-Watts Bar Dam were he received his licence for journeyman as a structural iron worker.

He was a member of the Ruritan National, he was a former baseball player with the Cleveland All Star, he loved watching western movies. He was a former member of the Overcoming Faith Christian Center in Athens, were he sang in the choir. The Mighty Clouds of Joy was one of his favorite gospel groups. He was affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ and became a Bishop under the leadership of Bishop Boyd Lawson with whom he traveled around the world preaching the gospel.

He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a powerful pastor with a very strong anointing on his life that was willing to share the word of God with all he encountered.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Doris McDermott; sons: Cranston Hackett, Chalmer McDermott, Charlton McDermott and John Thomas, all of Cleveland; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The body may be viewed Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m at the Patton Funeral Home Chapel, 265 Fair Street S.E.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11 a.m until service time at noon at St. James Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, 151 Short Street N.E. with the Rev. Rhonda S. Westfield officiating.
