James William Watkins, 76, entered into eternal rest on the morning of Sunday, April 27, 2014, in Cleveland.
He was born to the late Henderson and Mattie Watkins on June 5, 1936, in Stevenson, Ala. where he grew up. He married the late Julia Watkins, and they lived together in Akron, Ohio, before relocating to Cleveland.
He was a custodian at JC Penney until he retired in 1999 and a faithful deacon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Being passionate about God’s work, he played an active role in ministry by being a part of the choir and deacon board.
He was preceded in death by six of his sisters; his only brother; and granddaughter, Stephanie Cobb-Glover.
He is survived by a sister, Mary Hardric of Hollywood, Ala.; two children: Dewayne (Park) Cobb and Ruth Stokes, both of Cleveland; two grandsons he raised: Kevin (Areia) Cobb of Ellenwood, Ga., and Keith (DeKeta) Cobb of Snellville, Ga.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014, at noon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Inman and East streets, with the Rev. Edward S. Robinson officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
Interment will follow at Fort Hill Cemetery.
Visitation by friends will be Friday from 1 until 6 pm. at M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home in Cleveland.
