The hopes of getting the District 5-AAA Baseball Tournament underway as scheduled Wednesday were washed away by an afternoon shower.
“Just got 30 minutes of steady rain and the outfield is soup,” Ooltewah coach Brian Hitchcox said in a text message about conditions at A.C. “Bud” Ball Field just after 1 p.m. yesterday.
With the first four days of the event now pushed back a day, plans are to get underway this afternoon with a trio of games now planned for Sunday to get the event back on track.
Fifth-seeded Cleveland High (10-18, 5-7) will open the event against the No. 4 seed host Owls (16-12, 7-5), who won the tournament last year, at 4 this afternoon. Sixth-seeded Walker Valley (10-18, 2-10) will take the diamond against No. 3 seed Soddy-Daisy (16-14, 8-4) in this evening’s nightcap at 7.
With the adjusted schedule, second-seeded Bradley Central (17-11, 9-3) will take on McMinn County (11-16, 2-10), the No. 7 seed, at 5 Friday evening, with tonight’s Cleveland/Ooltewah victor facing top-seeded East Hamilton (21-13, 9-3) at 8.
On Saturday, Bradley, Walker Valley, Soddy-Daisy and McMinn County will all return to Ball Field for a pair of games. The Bear-Cherokee winner will face the Mustang-Trojan victor at 1 p.m., while the losers of those two opening round games will face off in an elimination contest at 4.
Sunday’s new tripleheader will start at 1 p.m. with a pair of elimination contests before the winner’s bracket final will award the first of two Region 3-AAA berths in a 7 p.m. battle.
The Cleveland/Ooltewah opening round loser will face the loser of Saturday’s first game in Sunday’s first game, while the 4 p.m. contest will feature the winner of Saturday’s second game taking on the loser of the East Hamilton/Cleveland-Ooltewah loser.
Single games in the loser’s bracket will be played Monday and Tuesday, with the district championship game slated for 4 p.m. on Wednesday. An “if necessary” title contest would follow immediately.
The District 5-AA Baseball Tournament will hold its play-in game this evening as Polk County travels to Sweetwater for a chance to advance to the double-elimination portion of the event.
The winner of today’s “cat fight” will advance to face state-ranked and top-seeded Sequoyah at McMinn Central High School Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The host Chargers and Loudon will square off in the other opening round matchup.
On Monday, Saturday’s winners will tangle for a spot in the district championship game, as well as a berth in the Region 3-AA tournament, while the losers will do an elimination battle.
The second spot in the district title matchup, plus the other region berth, will be determined on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The 5-AAA championship game(s) are set for Wednesday at 4 and 7 p.m., if necessary.
