Allen Hovious, partner with LBMC Planning Services LLC, will present the keynote address at the 2014 Mel Bedwell Small Business Person of the Year Award luncheon on Monday, May 6, at the Museum Center at Five Points.

Sponsored by the Small Business Committee, the annual event kicks off the celebration of Small Business Month by the Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce.

Hovious has been heavily involved with the development and implementation of strategic plans and marketing plans for international, national and local clients.

Prior to owning his own consulting practice, he was the driving force for implementing corporate strategic and marketing plans at the Jack Daniel Distillery for eight years.

His primary responsibilities were to leverage the brand’s unique character to a growing and multifaceted target audience while continuing to build valuable brand equity for future use.

Hovious has a wide range of consulting expertise, including strategic management, succession planning, image-driven marketing and branding, information strategy, and organizational productivity.

His broad experience includes work across many industries, including packaged goods, financial institutions, record companies, entertainment managers, service firms, major manufacturers of durable goods, medical providers, telecommunication companies, a variety of entrepreneurial ventures and numerous nonprofit organizations.

His techniques help organizations understand their total business and, as a result, improve morale, performance, communication and accountability.

His unique method of diagnosing an organization’s strategic needs and his team approach to implementing the plans have earned him long-term relationships with many nationally known organizations such as BMI (Broadcast Music Incorporated), Jack Daniel, Delek, Diners Club International and Sara Lee Foods.

A highlight of the Bedwell Award luncheon is recognition of an outstanding small business person in Cleveland and Bradley County for his/her success in six areas: staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales, innovativeness of product or service offered, response to adversity, and evidence of contributions to the community.

The Chamber board of directors renamed the Small Business Person of the Year Award to honor the memory of Mel Bedwell, who was known for his energy, determination, ingenuity, honesty, enthusiasm and loyalty — all traits necessary for a successful small business owner. Bedwell was an owner with Jack Smith of Cleveland Business Machines.

Reservations must be made by Thursday by calling the Chamber office at 423-472-6587 or by registering online through the Chamber’s events calendar at www.clevelandchamber.com. Single tickets are $20, and corporate tables of eight are $175.
