Squirrels can be really fun to watch, but for utility companies they can be pesky problems.

Just ask Cleveland Utilities personnel, who found one such critter had gotten into their Sequoyah substation Monday afternoon.

The animal’s curiosity was responsible for a brief power outage in the northern part of Cleveland causing stores to either refuse customers or leaving restaurant patrons in the dark.

Drivers in the Paul Huff Parkway area also had to use patience as the traffic lights were also darkened.

Squirrels plague most utility companies and Cleveland has not been an exception.

“We have put squirrel guards on our equipment and it has helped lower the number of these types of incidents,” said Jamie Creekmore of Cleveland Utilities. “This one just got through.”

Creekmore said the power was restored in less than an hour.
