BENTON — For the first time since 1994, the Polk County Lady Wildcats clinched the District 5-AA regular-season title.
With their 1-0 win over Sequoyah on Wednesday evening, the Lady Wildcats got the final win required for a perfect 8-0 District 5-AA record.
Briana Muller fanned six Lady Chief batters and only gave up one hit in the history-making victory.
While Sequoyah was held scoreless for seven innings, Polk County was able to get its lone run the bottom of the third.
Ashlynn Johnson was able to capitalize on a Lady Chiefs’ error in the outfield and ran in for the game-winning, and only, run of the evening.
“It was a highly contested game, but in the end we made one more play than they did and our pitcher was a little better than theirs,” Lady Wildcats’ coach Bill Triplett stated.
By clinching the district regular season title, the Lady Wildcats have secured themselves the home field advantage for the District 5-AA tournament.
Polk will host Bradley Central at 5:30 p.m. today.
