MORRISTOWN — The 14th ranked Walters State Senators outlasted the Cleveland State baseball team on Friday afternoon as they legislated a 10-6 win over the Cougars in the first game of a three-game TCCAA Region VII Conference weekend series.

The Senators (36-10, 19-4) scored at least one run in each of the first six innings and pounded out 14 hits along the way as the Cougars played catch-up all afternoon long.

The home team jumped out to a quick lead with seven runs in the first three frames and never looked back. Austin Norrell and Ross Grosvenor singled in a run each in the first to put the Senators on top. A Cougar miscue and RBI from Norrell and Michael Smith pushed the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second, and then the home team tacked on a two-run homer in the third by Brycen Roberts.

The Cougars (23-18, 10-12) cut into the lead with three in the third. Janson Roberson doubled to start the uprising and moved to third on a single from Zach Janes. Evan Speicher drove in a run with a groundout, and Keith Buckhault did the same while the third run crossed on a Senator throwing error.

Walters State just kept right on going as James Fowlkes hit a solo homer in the fourth, a sacrifice fly in the fifth plated another run, and Austin Taylor singled in a run in the sixth as the Senator lead grew to a 10-3 spread.

The Cougars picked up a pair of runs in their half of the eighth as Wright Hackett doubled in a run and later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Roberson. Chase Shaw doubled and came around to score in the top of the ninth on a grounder to third base by Buckhault, but the Senators were able to end the rally and finish game one.

Bobby Towne (6-3) suffered the loss on the mound for the Cougars while Matt Roueche and Kevin Carr pitched in relief. Brent Honeywell picked up the win for the Senators.
