Still, the Lady Raiders continue to struggle to put together a complete game. Cleveland held its own against East Hamilton until the Lady Hurricanes blew through the fifth inning to score five runs on their way to a 6-0 win.
The victory improves East Hamilton to 14-5 and 7-2 in District 5-AAA play. The Lady Raiders dropped to 2-13, 0-9
“I’ve been talking to them about competing and coming out here and attacking and having that sense of urgency. We were kind of laissez-faire the first few innings, that’s when we have to step up and have that sense of urgency and want to attack,” said Stobert.
“We were putting the ball in play; unfortunately we weren’t able to score the runs. We did some good things. We were getting our bunts down and doing the fundamentals, we were just leaving runners on base. I think we had a good day at the plate today, it just didn’t go our way.”
The Lady Hurricanes scored a single run in the top of the first on a pair of singles and a walk aided by a Cleveland throwing error.
The teams settled into a pitcher’s duel for the next three innings. Lady Raiders pitcher Haley Hodgson gave up only one hit during the stretch and was backed by a solid defensive effort.
The winds picked up big time for the Lady Hurricanes in the top of the fifth. East Hamilton banged out back-to-back doubles and a pair of singles. Two bases loaded-walks and a two-RBI single put the Lady Hurricanes out front 6-0.
Shay Sparks and Brittany Arnold kept the Lady Raiders breathing in the bottom of the sixth with two-out singles. But both were left stranded. Teliyah Cobb singled in the seventh and reached third before East Hamilton got a ground ball to end the game.
“Our goal each inning is to prevent the big inning. If we can keep it under two runs an inning, that is our goal. They had the one big inning. The first inning was an error on our part. Things could have gone either way if we prevent that one inning,” said Stobert.
“The big thing is we are improving. We are doing a lot of good things. Even though we are not winning a lot of ballgames, we are competing.”
