TRAFFIC along Lower River Road was shut down for approximately 15 hours Monday after the driver of an 18-wheeler reportedly tried to dodge a deer and drove the rig into a ditch. A narrow shoulder on the roadway also broke away. The truck was loaded with 44,000 pounds of dry chemicals from a nearby plant, according to the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office. The truck didn’t overturn, but the load shifted inside the trailer. No injuries were reported. Officials with emergency response had to offload the cargo onto a flatbed trailer. The side of the trailer was cut away to get to the cargo. The BCSO was aided by Tennessee Department of Transportation officials while extrication of the cargo was completed and the rig pulled from the ditch. The incident began around 8 a.m. and was concluded just before 11 p.m. Monday.
