The Walker Valley Mustangs were hoping a spring break trip to South Carolina would be the medicine they were looking for in order to get their baseball season jump-started.
Instead, the Mustangs followed the month of March and went out like a lamb Monday night, in a 12-0 District 5-AAA loss to Ooltewah.
Winning pitcher Logan Fugate held the Mustangs to only four hits in the five-inning win while striking out seven.
John Simmons took the loss for Walker Valley, giving up eight hits in four innings of work.
Brandon Smith came in for Walker Valley with no outs in the top of the fifth.
After falling behind the Owls 3-0, Walker Valley's Ryan Shank and Tucker Mendenhall led off the bottom of the first for the Mustangs with back-to-back singles, but both were left stranded.
Brian Oliver ripped a two-out double for Walker Valley in the bottom of the second but was also left standing.
Ooltewah scored again in the second and twice more in the fourth before sending a dozen batters to the plate and blowing the game open in the top of the fifth. Simmons, with two on and no outs, traded places with Smith in left field after being lifted. The Walker Valley reliever gave up three hits, but the big damage was done with a walk and back-to-back-to-back hit batters that opened the floodgates for six Ooltewah runs.
The Mustangs fell to 6-10 overall and 2-5 in District 5-AAA while the Owls improved to 9-4, 4-1. Walker Valley will try to avoid the sweep tonight at Ooltewah. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
