Both will receive $5,000 to go toward their community efforts.
First Tennessee Cleveland Community President Mike Griffin expressed his excitement over the news.
“I think this whole program is just going to grow and grow and grow as more people hear about more organizations winning,” Griffin said. “The other organizations in Cleveland will get involved.”
The 150 Days of Giving campaign is First Tennessee Bank’s way of celebrating 150 years of service. A new nonprofit organization will be awarded $5,000 every day for the duration of the 150-day celebration. Winners are determined by the number of votes cast in their favor.
Griffin was impressed to see Cleveland State named the winner the first day. He said other schools like the University of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Vanderbilt University are also in the running for an award.
According to Griffin, Cleveland State really worked hard to take a lead. Students, faculty and supporters of the school jumped on board to support the cause.
Both Cleveland organizations beat out almost 1,000 other nonprofits spread across Tennessee.
Griffin said the winners are going to be those who take the challenge to heart and really make an effort.
“I would have thought the bigger organizations would have won first,” Griffin said. “It takes a lot to remember to vote every day. It is one thing to send out an email and have supporters vote right then. It is another for people to remember to vote the next day.”
Votes can be cast at 150daysofgiving.com. Approximately 16 local organizations are involved in the race for the one-time award of $5,000.
Voters do not have to disclose any personal information to vote. Votes may be made using various devices like a smartphone, laptop or tablet. Details on voting for the 10 different organizations are available on the website.
