The competition provides students an opportunity to apply classroom education and internship experiences to the “real-world experience” of creating and implementing a full public relations campaign.
“Although Bateman has been the most difficult task I have been given as a student, it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic career,” said Diana Stevenson, Lee PRSSA Bateman team member.
“Bateman has shown me how to take the lessons from the classroom and apply them in real time with a real client.”
The national PRSSA Chapter, in partnership with Fiserv Inc., a leading global provider of financial services technology solutions, challenges PRSSA Bateman teams to grow awareness and usage of Popmoney®, a service that facilitates digital person-to-person payments. This financial service allows users to securely send, request, and receive money from their existing bank account using just an email address or mobile number.
Each PRSSA Bateman team is challenged to research, plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive public relations campaign. Research and planning are completed November through January, teams implement in February, and final entries are due to PRSSA Headquarters this month.
More than 75 Bateman teams enter the competition each year, giving students experience that can translate to resume additions, portfolio pieces and even jobs.
“Over the past seven months, this team has worked hard to develop a creative and strategic campaign, and this February, they launched their campaign with much success,” said Dr. Christie Kleinmann, Lee PRSSA Bateman team faculty adviser. “I am so proud of these girls and their unfailing commitment to excellence.”
After an extensive judging process executed by the parent chapter, Public Relations Society of America and other professionals, three finalist Bateman teams will be chosen to present their campaigns to sponsor representatives this summer. First, second, and third place teams will be rewarded. All teams will be recognized at the 2014 PRSSA National Conference in Washington, D.C.
Since the first Lee PRSSA Bateman team campaign in 2003, Lee teams have placed fourth nationally and have received three honorable mentions. The Lee PRSSA Bateman team annually competes against approximately 60 universities nationwide.
Lee PRSSA Bateman team 2013-14 members include public relations seniors Erin Evors, Stephanie Olson, Krystin Reppond, Stevenson and Julia Wilhelm.
