MADISONVILLE — After a snow delay in the opening inning, it took a final at bat rally, but the Polk County softball squad kept its District 5-AA record perfect Tuesday evening.

“It came down hard and made the field white, and after it melted off the field was wet,” declared Lady Wildcat coach Bill Triplett after the 8-6 come-from-behind victory over Sequoyah. They scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to capture an 8-6 victory over the Lady Chiefs.

“The weather was so bad, Hannah (Triplett, the Polk pitcher) had a hard time gripping the ball, so 120 of her 124 pitches were fastballs,” the veteran coach explained. “I’ve seen her have better stuff, but she battled. We were able to chip away and come back to get the win.”

Now 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in district play, Polk County will travel to Loudon Thursday for a rematch with the Lady Redskins. The Lady Wildcats claimed a 7-1 victory over the district newcomers Monday in Benton.

Polk opened the scoring Tuesday with a run in the game’s first at bat, but after the game had to be halted while the white stuff covered the field, the hosts bolted into the lead with a five-run rally in the bottom of the second frame.

The Lady Wildcats fought back with solo runs in the top of the third and fifth frames, but Sequoyah (1-3, 0-1) tacked on a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth.

Polk clawed back with a pair of sixth-inning scores and then rallied for three big runs in the top of the seventh for the victory.

“We just keep finding a way to win,” proclaimed Coach Triplett. “Hannah Withrow had two big RBIs for us and the lower part of our lineup is hitting well. We toughed it out.”

Withrow went 2-for-5 at the dish with a double as she drove home a pair of teammates, while Brianna Muller was 2-for-4 with a two-bagger of her own, plus she scored twice. Felicia Johnson also went 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored.

Hannah Triplett improved her pitching record to 6-1 on the season, striking out five in the complete-game effort.
