Lawhorn sets Walker Valley track records

CHATTANOOGA — With what their coach called their “best performance in at least the last two years,” the Walker Valley track teams posted a pair of Top 3 finishes at the Chattanooga Christian School track meet Friday.

“I was pleased with the effort that all of our athletes put forth in this track meet,” declared head coach Andrew Nunnelly after the Lady Mustangs took second place in the 12-team meet, while the Mustangs finished third.

Tennessee Wesleyan volleyball and track signee Rachel Lawhorn highlighted the Walker Valley effort on the day, setting a pair of new school records.

With a discus toss of 107-feet, 9-inches and a shot put throw of 36-feet, 5-inches, the senior won both events with new school marks, plus she earned a second place finish in the triple jump competition.

Teammate Cy Cy White finished second in the shot put and third in the discus, plus was fourth in the high jump.

The Lady Mustangs also got team points from the 4x400 meter relay team of Cydney Black, Hali Lowe, White and Gracie Pierce, who finished second overall. Sierra Green, Kayla Sims, Trinity Sellers and Lowe took third in the 4x800 relay.

Walker Valley had three girls place in the 300-meter hurdles as Pierce took third, Christy Shepherd was fourth and Sellers sixth.

In the 3,200-meter run, Sims came in third, with Sellers taking fifth overall.

The foursome of Skylar Earls, Nicole Hartman, Kyla Downes and Shepherd captured fourth place in the 4x100 relay, while Earls, Hartman, Sims and Shepherd were sixth in the 4x200 relay.

Adding to the Lady Mustang total, Cydney Black was fifth in the 100-meter and sixth in the 200-meter dashes.

Green and Pierce also had sixth place finishes in the 800-meter run and long jump respectively.

The Walker Valley boys’ effort was led by four runner-up finishes, including Mason McClure (1,600-meter run and high jump), Jason Burdin (triple jump) and the 4x400 relay team of Devin Pruett, Bryce Nunnelly, Keelan Graham and Zach Nicodemus.

Nunnelly and Nicodemus also captured third and sixth respectively in the 400-meter dash, while Pruett finished fourth in the 200-meter and fifth in the 100-meter dashes.

Luke McDonald and McClure came in fourth and fifth respectively in the 800-meter run.

Vincent Jur and CJ McCullough had fifth and sixth place finishes in the 3,200-meter run, while Nunnelly and Pruett did the same in the long jump.

The relay team of Alex King, John Hixon, Logan Smith and Zach Hartman took fifth in the 4x200 and sixth in the 4x100 dashes.

Sadler Bartula finished sixth in the discus.
