Emanuel Vern “E.V.” Underwood, 78, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday morning, Feb, 25, 2014, in a local hospital.

He was the son of the late Lonnie Mae Gainous Underwood and James Lester Underwood. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Underwood Blalock; brothers: James L.Underwood II, Paul L. Underwood, Joseph C. Underwood and Dean Underwood; sisters-in-law: Charlene Underwood and Wanda Underwood; brothers-in-law: Charles R. Beach and Jerrell Beach; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was retired from Greyhound Bus Lines with more than 30 years of service as a driver and trainer. He was based out of Atlanta, Ga. with Greyhound. After his retirement, he moved to Cleveland where he worked at the Church of God International Headquarters as a Security Guard.

He was an avid fisherman and a huge Atlanta Braves Baseball fan and a Tennessee Volunteer Football fan. He was loved by all and had a great sense of humor. He was a member of the North Cleveland Church of God.

Survivors include his sisters: Lois U. Beach and Virginia U. Peters, both of Cleveland, and Barbara U. Withrow and her husband, Whink, of Charleston; brothers: David N. Underwood and his wife, Frankie, of Kingsport, Samuel D. Underwood and his wife, Wilma, of Clarksville and Melvin H. Underwood and his wife, Esther, of The Villages, Fla.; his godson, Alan Emanuel Underwood of Washington, D.C.; 27 nieces and nephews; 52 great-nieces and nephews; and his sisters-in-law: Wilma Underwood of Lincolnton, N.C. and Margaret U. Timmerman of North Augusta, S.C.

The Remembrance of Life services will be held Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at 2 p.m. from the North Ocoee Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes with Pastor Mitch Maloney and Dr. Leonard Albert officiating.

Interment will follow in the Hilcrest Memorial Gardens with Alan Underwood, Justin Underwood, Robb Underwood, Dale Underwood, Joe Underwood and Randy Underwood serving as pallbearers. Military Honors will be given.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the James L. and Lonnie Underwood Science Scholarship, in care of Lee University, University Relations, P.O. Box 3450 Cleveland, TN 37320-3450.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday before the services at 2 at the funeral homes.
