EAST RIDGE — After a disappointing 36-point loss to Sequoyah last Monday in the District 5-AA consolation game, the Wildkittens found some improvement on the offensive side of things against Brainerd Friday night.
Unfortunately, the improvements made in the Region 3-AA quarterfinal game weren’t enough to extend the Wildkittens season any further, as they fell to the Lady Panthers 45-33.
Brainerd got off to a quick start, scoring 13 points in the first quarter and 17 in the second, while Polk was only able to net eight points and five points.
With just under three and a half minutes left in the first half, Brainerd was able to score 15 unanswered points, eight of which were scored by Jamee Ward.
Ward, the Lady Panthers’ key shooter, led the offensive charge for the night, racking up a total of 26 points in the game.
Brainerd’s scoring slowed down in the second half, as they only outscored Polk 10-7 in the third quarter.
With just 1:45 left in the third, the Lady Panthers were up 40-18 over the Wildkittens.
The Wildkittens were able to put together a solid 13-point quarter to close out the game and allowed the Lady Panthers only five points in the fourth.
Unfortunately for the Wildkittens, a strong finish was not enough to make up for a slow start, as they lost by 12 points.
Isabella Liner led Polk with 10 points, three assists, two rebounds and three steals.
Heather McLain chipped in nine points and nine rebounds of her own, while MiKayla McClary had eight points, an assist and five rebounds.
Hannah Withrow added six points to the Wildkittens’ total and had nine rebounds and a steal.
Felecia Johnson finished the night with five assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Polk hit 11-of-29 attempted 2-point shots, for a shooting percentage of 38-percent, and was 5-for-7 from the free throw line.
The Wildkittens closed out their season with an overall record of 11-18.
