Wildcats win at Hiwassee

The Polk County Wildcats traveled to North Carolina for one final win in their last game of the regular season.

The Wildcats (7-19, 0-8) finished things off with a 76-55 victory over the Hiwassee Dam Eagles Monday night.

The game got started off on a close note, with both teams ending the first quarter with a 20-all tie.

Polk was able to score 21 points in the second quarter, while Hiwassee Dam added 13 points to the board.

Another strong offensive effort in the third quarter resulted in the Wildcats outscoring the Eagles 24-15.

With a 65-48 lead going into the final eight minutes of play, Polk added 11 more points to its total and allowed its opponent just seven more.

Four Wildcats hit double digits Monday night, leading the scoring charge for the team.

Cody Groomes finished with 19 points, while Bryce Coffey netted 16 points in the game.

Will Richmond notched 15 points, which included four 3-pointers, with Gage Locke chipping in 12 points of his own.

Locke had seven assists in the game, while Groomes and Cross had six and five rebounds respectively.

Polk County will be back in action Thursday for District 5-AA tournament play-in games against Sweetwater.

The Wildcats will take on the Sweetwater Wildcats at 6 p.m. Thursday, and the Wildkittens will battle the Lady Wildcats at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of the play-in games will then go on to face McMinn Central’s boys and girls hoops squads on Friday.
