Margie Gilliland, 100, a former resident of Benton, passed away this morning, Jan. 24, 2014, in a local healthcare facility.

She was a member of Benton United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. She also was a member of Polk County Retired Teachers Association, Polk County Historical and Genological Society, and avidly supported Friends of the Library in Benton and the Lady Vols.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Squire Bill and Laura Christian Gilliland; her brothers: Foy Gilliland and Broughton Gilliland; and sisters: Eva Lee Bates and Ovean Scarbrough.

She is survived by a brother, Chet Gilliland of Etowah; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home in Benton conducted by the Rev. Betsy Switzer.

Interment will follow at Benton Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home prior to the service.
