Traffic along the Ocoee River Gorge was shut down for several hours as an investigation was initiated.
The crash occurred just after 2:30 p.m.
Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper Jacob Potter filed his initial report late Wednesday.
According to Potter, Lydon T. Parve, 51, was traveling westbound when his Ford Windstar van crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Peterbilt 18-wheeler rig driven by Ronald A. Hemphill, 27, of Rock Hill, S.C.
Both drivers were restrained by seat belts, according to Potter.
Hemphill was not injured in the crash.
Further drug and alcohol testing has been requested as the crash investigation continues.
Emergency responders worked several hours with THP and other area law enforcement diverting traffic from the river gorge.
According to West Polk Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Lofty, fire and rescue personnel aided at the scene and each end of the gorge until the roadway was reopened just before 7 p.m.
