HIAWASSEE, Ga. — Friday’s action as the The Battle of the States Tournament came to a close with losses for both Polk County basketball teams.

The Wildcats and Wildkittens played in consolation games after press time Saturday (full details will be in Monday’s Banner).

After defeating one North Carolina team — Murphy — on Thursday, the Wildcats (3-11) fell to another — the Hayesville Yellow Jackets — by a 51-37 tally Friday.

Facing teams from the same schools, the Wildkittens (7-6) had similar results.

Polk County will return to regular season acion this Friday evening with a trip to Decatur to face longtime rival Meigs County.

The Wildcat game against Hayesville started off very slow offensively, with the Carolina boys taking a 4-2 lead over Polk County by the end of the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets further stung the Wildcats in the second quarter and added 18 points to the scoreboard, while Polk netted 10 more points.

The Wildcats entered the second half with a 10 point deficit, and were able to add 11 more points to their total in the third.

Unfortunately for the “Big Red,” Hayesville was still able to hold onto the lead by scoring 16 points in the third quarter.

The Wildcats managed to outscore the Yellow Jackets 14-13 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to stage a come-from-behind win as their North Carolina opponent came away with a 14 point victory.

Cody Groomes led Polk with 16 points, which included quartet of treys.

The Wildcats went 11-for-19 at the charity stripe Friday afternoon.

LADY YELLOW JACKETS 47

WILDKITTENS 34

The Wildkittens fared no better against the sting of the Lady Yellow Jackets, as Hayesville came away with a 13 point, 47-34 victory Friday.

The game got off to a close start, with Polk only trailing Hayesville 10-9 by the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Yellow Jackets began to take off with a more solid lead in the second quarter, and closing the first half with a 21-16 lead over the Wildkittens.

Polk County faltered in the third quarter, scoring a game low six points while Hayesville was able to tack on 16 more points to the scoreboard.

The Wildkittens battled back in the final quarter to outscore Hayesville 12-10, but still felt the sting of a 47-34 loss.

In Friday’s loss, Polk gave up 24 turnovers and had 20 rebounds.

Heather McLain lead the Wildkittens with 11 points and six rebounds.

Isabella Liner hit two 3-pointers, while Felecia Johnson and McLain each hit a trey of their own.

WILDKITTENS 49

LADY BULLDOGS 41

On Thursday at the Battle of the States Tournament, the Polk County girls were able to top Murphy 49-41.

The first quarter ended in a 9-all tie between the two teams, and remained close as the Wildkittens held a two point, 21-19 lead over the Lady Bulldogs to end the first half.

Polk saw their offense spring to life in the third quarter, scoring 16 points to Murphy’s 13 points.

Another 12 points added to the Wildkitten’s scoreboard solidified the eight point victory.

Isabella Liner led the way for Polk County with a total of 18 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers.

Heather McLain and Hannah Withrow racked up 15 and 10 points respectively.

Withrow also lead the team in rebounds with a total of nine.
