The Walker Valley wrestling mat got slapped 11 times Tuesday evening, including nine of the first 10 matches going the Mustangs’ way in an easy victory over William Blount.
“We came out with a lot of intensity, which is good to see,” declared Walker Valley coach Alan Morris after his “Stallions” took a dozen matches in the 64-12 outcome.
“We had a great practice Monday and then we came out and showed it today,” the veteran mat coach expressed. “We still have some thing we need to work on. We got a lot of pins, but we let some others slip away.”
Now 5-4 on the season, Walker Valley will make the short trip to Cleveland High Thursday to face Alcoa at 4:30. “That match has been changed up some due to [academic] finals. Cleveland and Alcoa are going to wrestle first at 3:30, then we’ll come in and wrestle Alcoa. Later on Tullahoma is coming over to wrestle Cleveland. We were also supposed to wrestle them, but we’ll put that off until they come wrestle in our duals tournament.”
Walker Valley will also participate in the Bradley Invitational Friday and Saturday at Jim Smiddy Arena.
Despite missing several starters due to illness and injuries, the Mustangs opened Tuesday’s meet with four straight pins.
Robert Varner got things going, sticking his 106-pound opponent at the 2:26 mark. Zane Smith posted the quickest pin of the evening, needing just 17 seconds to put his 112-pound opponent’s shoulders to the mat.
Eli Earls (120) and Ed Johnson (126) got the referee to slap the mat in 2:50 and 1:52 respectively.
After William Blount posted its first win at 132, the hosts strung together seven straight victories as Joseph Munoz (138), Tyrus Hamrick (145), Tanner McGwire (152), Ryan Hager (160) and Lawrence Cotton (170) all earned pins, while Billy Raulston (182) won the first match to go the distance with a 4-2 decision.
Ric Kennett posted an 11-0 shutout for a major decision at 195 for the Mustangs, and after the boys from Maryville got their second stick of the night, heavyweight Zach Miller finished off the victory with a 5-1 decision.
“We had a couple of freshmen who filled in and did good jobs, and Zane Smith, a backup, got the fastest pin of the night,” praised Coach Morris. “Robert Varner and Tanner McGwire came up big for us. McGwire stepped in at 152 and we bumped up at 160 (Hager) and 170 (Cotton).”
“We’ve got some sick, some injured and a few that are still working on their weight descend,” he added.
