The Cleveland Middle School Dance Team won the best sportsmanship award and three first place awards in a recent competition.
On Nov. 9, the Cleveland Middle School Dance Team competed in the Jamfest Cheer and Dance Competition in Nashville. The 27 talented CMS dancers brought home first place in the junior high pom, junior high jazz and junior high hip-hop categories.
The CMS Raiderettes also won the overall Best Sportsmanship Award out of all the teams attending.
The competition’s judges described the CMS dancers as being “fun to watch” and “very energetic.”
Kelly Owens, CMS dance coach, described this year’s team as being extremely dedicated and hardworking.
“Every year we just get better and better at what we do,” Owens said. “We take the comments on our judges’ sheets very seriously and spend hours of practice fixing all of the corrections. This year’s team is committed to excellence in that they do not complain about going over and over a routine in order to better themselves. They truly have impeccable work ethic and drive. I am proud of them.”
The CMS Dance Team recently completed its football season performances. The team is now moving full force into their basketball schedule.
The team recently danced in the charity event for the Mercy’s Door Children’s Home in Dalton, Ga.
Owens was proud to say her team had also performed at halftime during an Auburn University sporting event.
The spirited Raiderettes will compete soon in Murfreesboro, Dalton, Sevierville, Chattanooga, Ringgold, Ga., and Birmingham, Ala. The team will also travel to Orlando, Fla., to perform at Disney World.
