Volleyball Lady Flames dominate to capture region crown

The Lee University volleyball team punched its ticket to the NCCAA National Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Campbellsville on Saturday night to capture the Mid-East Region Tournament title in front of a delighted home crowd at Walker Arena.

The Lady Flames stormed through the region dropping just one set over four matches this weekend.

Lee found themselves in an unfamiliar spot in Saturday's final match with the Lady Tigers as they dropped their first set of the weekend 15-25. The home team would rally back, however, and take the second set 25-23 before scoring two convincing victories (25-18, 25-17) in the final two sets two close out the match.

Paula Martins capped off a tremendous tournament performance with 18 kills to lead the offensive attack for the Lady Flames. The senior was named Tournament Most Valuable Player after the match. Latrice Johnson collected 16 slams of her own to go along with eight digs. Lauren Williams finished with 12 kills and registered a .632 attack percentage. Camil Martinez set the table with 45 assists while adding seven kills. Williams and Martinez joined Martins as members of the All-Tournament squad.

The win not only secures the Lady Flames a spot at nationals it also marks their 20th victory of the season (20-8). Coach Andrea Hudson's clubs have now won a remarkable 20 or more matches in 20 consecutive seasons under her leadership.

The victory also extends the Lady Flames home winning streak. Since dropping the opening match on Sept. 7 Lee has won 17 consecutive home matches.

The loss drops Campbellsville to 28-9 on the season. The Lady Tigers were based by Rinata Aisena's 14 kills and Kelly Moyer's 10. Giselle Hernandez added nine kills and was named to the All-Tournament team joining teammate Caitlin Dressing. Jackie Schwieger set up the Lady Tiger offense with 45 assists.

The Lady Flames now set their sights on a national title when they begin in the NCCAA National Championship on Dec. 5 in Kissimmee, Fla.

Lee continued to run through the competition in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament, topping Victory (15-12) in straight sets (25-11, 25-14, 25-9) Saturday afternoon in Walker Arena.

Lee used a balance scoring attack to pull away from the Eagles. Martins continued her stellar play with a game-high nine slams. Johnson followed with eight kills, and Williams added seven of her own. Following the match Martins, Johnson and Williams were named to the NCCAA Mid-East All-Region team and were joined by teammates Martinez and Libby Peigen.

Sarah Davis led the defensive effort with 17 digs. Both Martinez and Becky Bourne saw time at the setter position. Martinez finished with 15 assists while Bourne pitched in 14.

The Lady Flames stormed out of the gate and held a commanding lead over the Cougars before many of the spectators had found their seats in Friday's nightcap. When it was all said and done, Lee had scored its second consecutive straight set victory of the tournament topping Mid Continent, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-9).

Paula Martins set the tone for the home team. The middle blocker from Rio De Janiero, Brazil, finished with 17 slams in the contest on a sizzling .640 attack percentage. Martins would also add four blocks and three service aces.

Erin Hill followed with eight kills, while Lauren Williams added six kills and five blocks. Camil Martinez served up 26 assists, while fellow senior Becky Bourne pitched in seven of her own.

Lee continued their dominant play at home as they began the postseason with a 3-0 route of Union University in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Volleyball Championship on Friday afternoon in Walker Arena.

The Lady Flames and Lady Bulldogs are no strangers to one another, having played twice in the regular season as members of the Gulf South Conference. Lee came away victorious in the previous two meetings as well.

Coach Hudson's club stormed out of the gate and never looked back en route to a 25-12 opening set victory. That would set the tone for the entire match as Lee held control from start to finish to move to 1-0 in the pool play format. The Lady Flames won set two 25-9 before closing things out in the final set, 25-19.

Martins led the charge for the home team as she finished with 12 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Williams joined Martins in double figures with 10 slams. Williams was solid at the net as well with six blocks.

Martinez set the offense up with 34 assists, while Latrice Johnson added eight kills and a game-high 18 digs to help round out the straight set victory.
