The agreement will allow alumni and staff of Cleveland State to receive application fee waivers and discounted tuition to the online university.
“This partnership offers our students and graduates a wonderful opportunity,” said Dr. Carl Hite, president of Cleveland State.
The agreement is also set to ease the college credit transfer process between the two colleges.
WGU Tennessee was launched by Gov. Bill Haslam earlier this year to add an extra option for earning college degrees. It offers accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in fields like business, education and nursing. All courses are offered online.
“Today’s agreement is the beginning of a great relationship between Cleveland State and WGU Tennessee,” said Dr. Kimberly K. Estep, chancellor of WGU Tennessee.
“WGU Tennessee provides a smooth transition for community college graduates who want to complete a bachelor’s degree. With this agreement, it will be easier and more affordable for Cleveland State graduates to meet their educational goals and advance their careers.”
Estep said graduates and staff members of Cleveland State would receive a 5 percent tuition discount to WGU in addition to the waived application fees.
“WGU Tennessee and Cleveland State share a goal of helping all Tennesseans achieve their education goals at an affordable price,” Hite said.
The online degree program is a private university that is “state-endorsed.”
Admission is currently only open to Tennessee residents.
WGU Tennessee is one of four WGU programs tied to specific states. Similar websites and degree programs are offered to residents of Indiana, Missouri, Texas and Washington.
Cleveland State had already signed articulation agreements with a few other universities, including Trevecca Nazarene University, Tennessee Wesleyan College and Bryan College. However, conditions for each have varied.
Many of the agreements ensure college credits will transfer, and some college partnerships allow students to do things like begin taking bachelor’s-level courses on campus at Cleveland State.
