Vernie Lee White, 83, a resident of Cleveland, went home to be with his Heavenly Father, Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, at a local hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Swiney and Arkie Kirkland White; his brothers: Troy and Ray White; and sisters: Elsie Ledford, Lurie Burrell and Ruth Graves.
He was an active member and deacon of the Washington Ave. Baptist Church, where he served for many years. Some years ago he was also choir leader at the church. He was a well-known carpenter working for E.J. Bonner for many years. He also loved to build things for other people in his workshop at home.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Della Faye White; sons: Billy and wife, Diane White of Etowah, Tommy and wife, Diane White and Bruce White, all of Cleveland; his daughter, Sharon and husband, Michael Oliver of Cleveland; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many more that always knew him as “Papaw”; brother, Junior White of Greenville S.C.; sister, Reba Huskey of Englewood; and several nieces and nephews.
A Remembrance of Life service will be held ata 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at Washington Ave. Baptist Church with Pastor Beecher White, the Rev. Daniel White and the Rev. Jason Barnes officiating.
Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens with sons and grandsons serving as casket bearers, who considered him not only their dad and grandpa but also their best friend.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dalton Jones, Devon Jones, Kamdon Oliver and Tucker Beshears.
The family will receive friends 5 until 9 this evening and Friday from 2 until service time at the church.
The Wildwood Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes has charge of the arrangements.
