Smith heads list of state CC contenders

Local cross country runners made quite a strong showing in their respective regional championships this week.

On Thursday, Bradley Central’s Harold Smith became the Region 3-AAA back-to-back boys’ individual champion after finishing with a time of 16:34.71.

Smith will be joined in state individual competition by teammate Collin Swaltney, who finished ninth in Dayton with a time of 17:54.22.

As far as overall team rankings go, Cleveland led the local schools with a seventh place finish, with Bradley coming in eighth. Walker Valley finished in 10th place.

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, Polk County participated in the Region 3 A-AA championship down in Chattanooga.

The girls team finished first overall, earning themselves a trip to the state competition on November 2.

Polk County also had four runners qualify for individual competition.

Shelby Moyers finished in fourth place Tuesday with a time of 22:42.55, while Amber Moyers finished seventh with a time of 23:07.30.

Hannah Withrow rounded out the top 10 and claimed the final individual spot with her time of 23:25.55.

In the boys’ competition, Justin Schoelzel finished sixth with his time of 18:28.77.

State competition will take place at the Steeplechase course in Nashville on November 2.

The Class AAA boys’ race will begin at 11:45 a.m.

The Class A-AA girls’ race begins at 2:40, with the Class A-AA boys beginning at 3:20.
