Investigation continues in a home invasion/sexual assault case and officials continue to ask for the community’s help for any information which could lead to identifying a suspect.

One week ago, a man entered a home located on Wilkinson Road in northeastern Bradley County around 10 p.m.

The female resident and a child were asleep inside the home, according to Capt. David Shoemaker of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.

Shoemaker said the victim was awakened from her sleep by a noise in another room.

The perpetrator then attacked and sexually assaulted the woman, according to initial reports.

Investigators have been questioning a number of people and working to establish the identity of the perpetrator, who should have several bite and scratch marks on his person.

“This is a type of crime that doesn’t happen in Bradley County,” said assistant District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett.

Hatchett said an incident several years ago involving a burglar who attacked a woman and sexually assaulted her, was “a crime of opportunity.”

“This is the first case of this type we have had in Bradley County since I have been in this job,” Hatchett said.

Hatchett related the Wilkinson Road case as one that was possibly a planned crime.

The victim could not identify the perpetrator, according to reports, but she did indicate the man was possibly over 6-feet tall and wearing dark clothing.

Detectives recovered items through evidence collection which could help identify the perpetrator.

Anyone having information is asked to contact the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 728-7336 or the non-emergency hotline at 728-7311 and follow the correct voice prompts to reach a dispatcher.
