WRIGHT WAY: A warning to the world?

All your phone calls, letters, visits and prayers for a speedy recovery were just what the doctor ordered to get me back on my feet and feeling fine in record time!

I thank everyone who thought of me and continued their own journey of applying Bible principles in a world that, coincidentally, has its own health issues, not unlike mine.

You know, the moment my cardiologist told me I needed immediate multiple bypass surgery due to five blocked arteries, I knew there was the slight chance of death looming over my operation. I also had to read and sign waivers acknowledging my understanding of the risks involved and agree to release the hospital and doctors of any culpability.

This made me think how this world also has several life-threatening blockages that is preventing society from leading a healthier lifestyle, especially in the eyes of God. These “blockages” come in the form of a world that consumes an unhealthy amount of violence and sexually explicit material while pursing a lifestyle of materialism which prevents a healthy flow of communication between nations, families and their Creator.

If corrective measures are not taken soon, these symptoms clogging up society will lead to the inevitable fate described at 1John 2:16-17: “Everything that belongs to the world — what the sinful self desires, what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of — none of this comes from the Father; it all comes from the world. The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever.” — Good News Translation.

According to the Bible, this world will “pass away” if it does not change its ways. Not unlike myself, drastic measures need to be taken to get to the heart of this problem and prevent individuals from “passing away.” By means of God’s servants, the world is constantly being warned of the risks involved for continuing in a spiritually detrimental course. Individuals can choose to heed the Bible’s counsel or waive their right to make changes, thereby accepting the consequences.

As God told his wayward people in the past at Isaiah 65:12, “I will destine you to the sword, and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter, because when I called, you did not answer; when I spoke, you did not listen, but you did what was evil in my eyes and chose what I did not delight in.” — English Standard Version.

Happily, this loving Physician does not want that fate for anyone. As He explained through His prophet Ezekiel at Ezekiel 33:11, “Tell them that as surely as I, the Sovereign LORD, am the living God, I do not enjoy seeing sinners die. I would rather see them stop sinning and live.” — Good News Translation.

Like any good physician, our heavenly Father is giving us the best advice on how to keep living and enjoy a healthier, more productive life. That is what my doctors are doing with me. But they cannot make me take their advice. I have to listen and obey. It’s my choice. If I want to keep living, I have to make changes in my life, right?

As with my genetically defective arteries, the whole world has inherited imperfection from our first parents, according to Romans 5:12. So, there is no way this world could ever stay spiritually healthy without accepting a redeemer, which God has provided through His only-begotten Son.

But there’s a powerful, invisible enemy — clever, demented, evil — bent on corrupting everyone and misleading them away from the only real source of eternal health and salvation. As Revelation 12:9 says Satan the Devil “leads the whole world astray.” — New International Version.

Millions believe this fallen angel is the source of most of the “junk food” being digested by this world. Like my own fight against junk food that could clog my new arteries, Christians are encouraged to “oppose the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw close to God and he will draw close to you.” — New World Translation.

Is this a prescription for a healthier lifestyle — avoiding what is literally and spiritually damaging and drawing closer to God? You decide. Like this world, I faced my own “last days” if I did not get professional help and make drastic changes to save my life. It reminded me of how the 23rd Psalm expressed it. I walked “through the valley of the shadow of death.” — King James Version.

There is still a “shadow of death” hanging over me. It is also hanging over this world. Make the wrong choices, do the wrong things, keep digesting what is not good for you and the shadow of death will reveal the reality: Death. If what the Bible says is true, and I believe it is, death does not have to be the eternal fate of anyone who wishes to take life’s water free, according to Revelation 22:17. It’s our choice.

I am grateful to God to be alive today. I am grateful for my doctors. I am grateful to you readers who encourage me and give me added reason to make the changes needed for a happier, healthier life. Thank you all! I want to live! So if you see me in a fast-food restaurant, tap me and remind me of what I said.

After all, who wants to walk in the valley of the shadow of death when they don’t have to?
