The city’s boost came from the commercial sector while residential new home construction helped the county top the $3 million mark for the first time in 2013.
The Cleveland Development and Engineering Services Department recorded 25 permits valued at $5.88 million while 35 county permits totaled $3.36 million.
City numbers included a $3.5 million manufacturing plant at 705 Industrial Drive S.W.
Other commercial construction included a $649,000 store buildout for Dunham’s Sports in Bradley Square Mall in the space formerly occupied by Sears. OK Maguey’s Mexican Grill, also at the mall, is undergoing a $90,000 renovation.
This is the second consecutive month that construction activity has figured prominently in city activity. In April, work began on the Santa Fe Cattle Co. restaurant at a cost of $908,000 and a Luigi’s Pizza valued at $175,000.
Other significant projects in May included renovations to the library at Cleveland State Community College valued at $149,000; mini warehouses at 3901 Michigan Avenue Road N.W., valued at $110,000; and Quality Machine is building a new shop at 1455 Blythe Ferry Rd. N.E., at a cost of $120,000.
Other commercial activity included a $40,000 makeover at 125 Keith St. N.W. for Jimmy John’s restaurant and the addition of a mini-clinic at CVS Pharmacy at 2153 North Ocoee St. That job was valued at $23,500.
The most recent numbers topped the $5.35 million recorded in February and $5 million in April. The month of May was also well ahead of the $3.053 million in January and $2.37 million in March.
Overall, the 25 permits issued by the city included 11 building additions/alterations that accounted for $539,153; seven commercial totaled $4.58 million and seven residential added $737,000.
Bradley County registered $2.17 million on 18 residential new home permits that ranged in value from $100,000 to $428,000. Six of the 18 permits were for double-wide mobile homes.
The county also registered $860,000 on nine commercial and industrial permits. They included three chicken houses valued at $250,000 each and an $80,000 permit for Voice of Evangelism at 410 Urbane Road.
In May 2012, Voice of Evangelism pulled a $13.4 million permit for Omega Ranch on Tillie Road N.E. and adjacent to Urbane Road, north of the Bradley County recreation area.
According to the Voice of Evangelism website, Omega Ranch Project will be built in three phases.
The first phase includes a large facility to house a youth ministry center, along with a larger meeting place for events, gatherings, conventions, partner conferences, camp meetings and prophetic conferences.
Phase II plans call for one of the most unique youth camp and retreat facilities, according to the website.
Situated on the “Ranch,” the buildings will have a Western theme and include a game and sports pavilion at the train station, a large barn for morning and evening services, other buildings such as the Freedom Jail, Omega Bank, God’s Theatre for the arts and worship, and a large cafeteria in the town’s general store.
A theme park type of setting will blend into the farm/ranch atmosphere on the land.
The third phase will be a working farm at which much of the food will be grown and raised for distribution to the poor and needy in the area.
Bradley County recorded eight permits in the residential additions permits totaling $337,404.
The May numbers for Bradley County easily topped the previous high of $2.82 million recorded in April. The county registered $2.14 million in January; $2.3 million in February and $2.03 in March.
