The Bible suggests a renovated earth as our final, eternal home. The New Earth will be bright, physical, and vibrant; brimming with Christ’s presence and free from suffering, sin, and death.

Some writers of God’s eternal Word looked forward to the Lord’s ultimate future and said that we will live in Heaven and then on earth in God’s great eternity.

It is as if Apostle Peter looked through eternity’s telescope and wrote: “The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire. . . . The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:7-10).

Then the Apostle says something that most of us overlook. He emphasizes that the new heaven and the new earth will be our home (v. 13).

As he was closing the great book of Revelation, John took up the same theme: “I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” (Revelation 21:1).

He continued: “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new ... He who overcomes will inherit all this’” (vv. 5, 7).

We will live in a city, called New Jerusalem, before the heavens and earth are made new. Then this gorgeous, shining, massive city will descend out of Heaven to the New Earth and become earth’s capital.

Fifteen times the book of Revelation says the place God’s people will live together is called a city, emphasizing it is a literal place. Where else could literal people live but in a literal place?

Our heaven, that is, our New Jerusalem, is a massive place — 1,400 miles square and 1,400 miles high (Revelation 27:15-16).

If this metropolis were set down in our nation, it would reach from Canada to Mexico and from California to the Appalachian Mountains. So, in Heaven we will have plenty of elbow room!

Heaven is so massive that the bottom floor would be about two million square miles. That is 10 times the size of France or 40 times as big as England and 15,000 times larger than London — and remember, we are discussing just the first floor!

Evangelist D.L. Moody, a 19-century preacher, discussed people coming from the four corners of the world and meeting at the river of life in Heaven:

“From opposite standpoints of the Christian world, from different quarters of human life and character, through various expressions of their common faith and hope, through diverse modes of conversion, through different portions of the Holy Scriptures, will the weary travelers enter the Heavenly City and meet each other on the shores of the same river of life.”

So God’s great plan is for you to accept His Son and follow Him faithfully until death or the Rapture. Then life you can hardly imagine will burst forth. You will never be bored, lonely, or disappointed.

Dr. Randy Alcorn comments, “This city will be different — it will have all the advantages we associate with earthly cities, but none of the disadvantages. The city will be filled with natural wonders, magnificent architecture, thriving culture.”

He concludes, “It will have no crime, pollution, sirens, traffic fatalities, garbage, or homelessness. It will truly be Heaven on Earth.” Makes you homesick, doesn’t it!
