MARION, Ind. — Day one of the 2013 NAIA Track & Field Championships has been completed and Lee University’s Mike Walker qualified for Saturday’s final of the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Walker trimmed over four seconds off of his personal best to record the third-fastest time in the preliminaries. His time of 9:17.94 was bested by Lewis-Clark State College’s Hayden Randall (9:16.22) and Bryan College’s Connor Hatfield (9:17.83).

Earlier in the day Brad Davis finished sixth in his heat and failed to qualify for the final of the 200 meter dash. Davis’ time of 22.30 was the 13th-fastest time overall and was 0.45 behind the final qualifying spot.

The women’s 4x800 relay team finished seventh in its heat and 20th overall with a time of 10:01.75.

The Flames and Lady Flames face two more preliminary races Friday afternoon. Cayce Bryan enters the 800 meter run with the seventh-best time of the season. Davis will look to improve upon his 13th-seeded time in the 100 meter dash.
