Soddy Daisy’s 30-plus year veteran racer Rick Hixson seems unbeatable early this season in competition Saturday nights at Cleveland Speedway.
Trading in his old No. 16 for the No. A-1 Mike and Theresa Simmons ride in 2013, Hixson has gotten a pair of “A-1 Towing & Service Center, AAA, Gene’s Racing Parts” Late Models going in the right direction — to Victory Lane, on multiple occasions.
Hixson picked off the season’s first win at the Shamrock in the Crate LM $1,200 special. Turning the Crate LM over to Lamar Scoggins, Hixson focused his efforts on the Steel-head LLM machine. After a pair of successful runs, Hixson gave the teams it’s first Steel-head LLM in mid April and hasn’t looked back, firing of four straight victories.
A couple wins tasted twice as nice as Scoggins proved victorious on the same nights as Hixson. The last two wins have given Hixson a solid 18-point lead over former track champion Lil’ John Ownbey. Hixson has been chased/raced by some of the best so far this season, beating reigning Southern Regional Racing Series Champion Riley Hickman, and former Ice Bowl Champ Bobby Mayse twice so far this season.
As for the competition former track champions Kevin Gibson and Dewayne Powell have seemed formidable opponents as has the likes of Georgia’s Ethan Hunter when sometimes “on the prowl” at Cleveland Speedway.
Racing gets back underway Saturday night with a full racing program beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are just $10. For more information including full points and results rundowns, visit the tracks website at ClevelandSpeedway.com.
