The Lady Wildcats’ only district losses have been at the hands of the Lady Tigers, and yesterday’s loss cost them a guaranteed spot in the Region 3-AA Tournament.
Polk County struck first after Lily Cuzzort’s double brought in Lydia Triplett — who had gotten things started with a double of her own — for the only run of the first inning.
That run would be the only one scored by the Lady Wildcats for the next five innings.
The Lady Tigers, on the other hand, got back-to-back runs in the third and fourth inning. They were also able to add three more runs in the fifth and sixth inning, extending their lead to 8-1 over Polk County.
Chloe Grayson’s homer in the bottom of the fifth accounted for the three runs.
Unwilling to go down without a fight, the Lady Wildcats clawed their way back to life in the top of the seventh.
Jordan Triplett made it home on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlyn Williams, which also left Felecia Johnson and Ashlynn Johnson in scoring positions on base.
Lydia Triplett’s second single of the evening drove Felecia Johnson in and Sydney Sloan’s follow-up single brought Ashlynn Johnson in for the third run of the inning.
Cuzzort also got a second double, resulting in Lydia Triplett coming home for another run.
The next run was scored by Sloan and followed up with a final run by Cuzzort.
Unfortunately for the Lady Wildcats, their six-run inning was not enough to stage a comeback victory.
The Lady Wildcats will have to win their next game if they hope to continue into the postseason.
