A strong start for Polk County didn’t translate into a win against McMinn County Wednesday evening.

The Lady Wildcats were forced into extra innings, where they wound up a run short as the Lady Cherokees picked up the 8-7 victory.

Things got started for Polk in the bottom of the first.

With two runners already on base, Lily Cuzzort’s double drove Lydia Triplett home for the first of what would be a four-run inning. Hannah Triplett’s follow up single brought Sydney Sloan in for the next run. Cuzzort and Hannah Triplett both got home for the final two runs of the inning.

In the bottom of the second, a single by Sloan drove Kaitlyn Williams in. Hannah Triplett’s single was enough to bring in two more and increased the Lady Wildcats lead to seven runs.

The Lady Cherokees’ bats came to life in the top of the fifth, as they were able to rack up four runs.

In the seventh, the visitors were able to tie up the game.

Polk County was unable to get a game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh, and the game continued on into the eighth inning.

McMinn County pulled ahead by one run, which was enough to earn the comeback victory as the Lady Wildcats were held at bay in the bottom of the eighth.

Polk County’s District 5-AA Tournament action begins at home on Monday at 5:30 p.m. as the No. 2 seeded Lady Wildcats take on No. 3 seeded Sequoyah.
