The Silver Team in sixth grade at Cleveland Middle School prepared for next week’s Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP ) with a hands-on activity at the outdoor classroom on the school’s campus.

Like most teachers across the state, Matthew Rodante, a CMS math teacher had spent the past couple weeks reviewing numerous TCAP standardized questions and how to best answer the problems. From state issued practice tests to stations to computer assessments to text books to game review, his students had completed just about every form of practice possible.

With a beautiful day forecasted for this past Friday, Rodante took advantage of the opportunity to give his students a break from the inside of his cinder block classroom while practicing the standards on which his students would be tested.

After a brief homework review, the students took their pencils, calculators and activity sheet down to the outdoor classroom. Rodante provided meter sticks and measuring tape for students to complete a number of real-life applications problems involving area, volume, decimals and estimation.

The students enjoyed the much needed breath of fresh air before four days of TCAP testing this week. Hopefully, the scores will positively reflect the students’ quality effort this school year!
