Blue Raiders open water polo season with victory

The Cleveland high school water polo team traveled to Memphis Saturday to begin the high school water polo season and returned with a pair of victories in the first competition of the inaugural season

The state has 11 schools fielding water polo teams this season. Four are located in the Memphis area.

In the first game against St. Benedict, the Blue Raiders dominated the competition compiling a 13-3 halftime lead and winning the game 22-10. The Blue Raiders were led by Matthew Herd with 13 goals. Trevor O’Neill added four goals. Charlie Haney scored three goals and John Kondor rounded out the scoring in adding two goals scored. Keeper Taylor Rhodes had a superlative game in goal, stopping the majority of shots on goal.

In the second game, Cleveland played Memphis University School. Cleveland rallied from a four-goal deficit at halftime to tie the game in regulation and force a shootout to decide the outcome.

In regulation play, Herd continued to dominate play from the two-meter hole position, scoring 10 goals. O’Neill contributed three goals and sharpshooter Charlie Haney also scored three goals. At the end of regulation, Rhodes shut down the MUS shooters three times and O’Neill found the back of the net with Cleveland's third shootout opportunity to secure the win and a perfect 2-0 start for the Blue Raider water polo team.

Other players contributing to the victories were Jaime Satterfield, Mason Conine and Conner Conine.
